The first meeting of the board has been scheduled for Friday, February 23, at 9 a.m., at the Heidrick Ag History Center, 1962 Hays Lane, Woodland, California.
It is expected that a public member of the board will be appointed following the board’s authorization. Who might be an effective advocate for the general public on this board?
How about Charlean Hartsfield, who most in the industry know as Charlean Fields? She is an attorney with the Office of the Alternate Public Defenders, Los Angeles county, where she has worked on behalf of the poor for many years.
Charlean would add a very different perspective to a fairly homogenous board. Yet, as she was married to Carl Fields, vice president of marketing for Monterey Mushrooms and Member of the Board of Directors of PMA before his untimely death in 2004, she also has enough knowledge of the industry to be taken seriously.
