United Calls For Mandatory, Federal,
Uniform Food Safety Standards

The Pundit had the pleasure of dining recently with United Fresh Co-Chairmen Maureen Marshall of Torrey Farms and Mark Miller of Fresh From Texas/Energy Sprouts, as well as other United board members, staff executives and their spouses. It is hard to leave such a dinner without feeling the produce industry has a bright future.

The Pundit goes back a long ways with Maureen, as the Poppa Pundit was buying cabbage from Maureen’s father to ship to Puerto Rico before the Pundit was even born, so we speak with the ease of multi-generational friendship. Maureen tells her own children and nephews and nieces about produce becoming part of the WIC program, produce getting into schools and of the long-term dietary trends favoring produce. She can tell them there will be opportunities in the old family farm in the years to come — although her young daughter is pretty smart and has announced she plans to run the trucking division.

Mark Miller may not know it but he is the exemplar of the opportunity in produce. No family connections, no deep produce roots, a banker with a vision. He stepped into an opportunity and brought competencies from outside the trade to help the trade advance. His life writes the story of an industry rich with opportunity for those willing and able to grasp it.

Dear United Fresh Members,

None of us can deny that our fresh produce industry faces a different business world today than we did six months ago. We have all been impacted by the recent food safety issues in our industry. Each time any fruit or vegetable is implicated in a foodborne illness outbreak, we all suffer from lost consumer confidence in our industry as a whole. In the long run, this is simply not sustainable and certainly not acceptable.

Over the past months, your Board of Directors and management staff have worked hard to assist our members facing the most pressing food safety issues. Our scientific and technical team has worked tirelessly in developing rigorous and measurable standards for Good Agricultural Practices for the production of lettuce and leafy greens. Meanwhile, our government affairs and regulatory team has been analyzing options to determine the best and most credible means to assure compliance with food safety standards for these and other commodities, as well as overall industry practices. These efforts are both short-term to help assure trade confidence for the produce items we are producing today, as well as long-term to assure consumer confidence in our products for many years ahead.

At the recent Board of Directors’ meeting this past weekend, your Board unanimously adopted a set a principles to shape our nation’s food safety regulatory process that we believe will provide the greatest assurance of food safety possible, combined with strong consumer confidence to sustain our industry for the future.

Let us explain the four guiding principles adopted by your Board.

  1. Produce safety standards first must be consistent and applicable to all produce grown anywhere in the United States, or imported into this country. We strongly applaud those industry members in different states and regions that are tackling food safety standards for produce. Your work has advanced our industry already. But to earn the long term trust of retailers, restaurateurs and most importantly, consumers, we believe that all fresh fruits and vegetables must be held to the same standards, regardless of their origin.
  2. Produce safety standards must be mandatory, with sufficient federal oversight in order to be credible to consumers. Strong and clear federal oversight is essential to building and maintaining public confidence in all of our products. The industry’s integrity and ability to defend ourselves in the event of an outbreak depends on our ability to assure the consumer that we are complying with government established, government enforced, and government supported food safety practices.
  3. These standards cannot depend upon marketing programs or voluntary certification. Again, we applaud those commodity groups and organizations that have risen to the challenge of current times, and are working to implement various voluntary standards in different parts of the industry. This important work demonstrates our industry’s commitment to adopting the highest food safety practices, even before federal requirements. Yet, while these programs are an important means for specific sectors of the industry to enhance performance, long-term public trust requires that such standards must be set by the government in an open and transparent process, with full input from industry, academia, consumers and all stakeholders.
  4. Finally, produce safety standards must allow for commodity-specific food safety practices based on the best available science. One size does not fit all in the produce industry, and a mandatory federal regulatory approach must contain needed scientific flexibility to address specific commodities differently based on the need.

Your Board of Directors not only voted unanimously to endorse these principles, but to drive a United States regulatory framework for the fresh produce industry that incorporates these principles as expeditiously as possible. We intend to work with all of our members, our allied produce industry associations, our customer associations in retail and foodservice, the Food and Drug Administration, USDA, members of Congress and all other stakeholders to implement federal food safety policies that are consistent with these principles.

While these steps may not always be comfortable, we are convinced they are necessary to protect the future of our fresh produce industry. We know scientifically that we cannot promise there will never be another outbreak of foodborne disease. But we also know that in the future, we must be able to stand side-by-side with government to reassure the public that together, we have done everything we know to implement and comply with strong mandatory government standards to protect public health.

We ask for your support and encourage you to make your views known as we go forward in this process together. Thank you.

The letter elucidates four principles:

Uniformity — no regional programs, no state programs. All produce, imported and domestic, must follow acceptable safety standards.

Mandatory, not voluntary — with federal government oversight.

Standards set by government — not industry.

Commodity-specific and based on science.

This is an important statement of goals. It is polite to all parties but draws a line in the sand between the regional, voluntary, maybe one day mandatory, governed by the industry, standards that Western Growers Association has been pushing, and what United’s board will consider acceptable.

United has the great advantage in this debate of being correct. The WGA approach can be, at best, a stop-gap, while a national program is developed.

At the same time translating this into action won’t be easy. The United approach requires laws to be passed by Congress and signed by the President. United President and CEO Tom Stenzel and United’s government relations team headed by Robert Guenther, Senior Vice president for Public Policy, are well aware of how few proposals ever become law.

So in issuing such a statement, United also takes on a major task.

An Achilles heel for the plan is the demand that the food safety standards be based on science. It is one of those things that is obvious, completely unobjectionable to all people of intelligence, yet, also, practically impossible to implement.

We don’t know the migration rate of E. coli 0157:H7 and anyone who says that they can prove, scientifically, how many feet a spinach field should be from a river is a liar or is crazy.

Even if we had perfect information, science doesn’t give us the answers. So if we somehow learn that a setback of 1000 feet from a river reduces the likelihood of E. coli 0157:H7 contamination by 2.4% from a 100-foot setback, does that mean we should put that in the standards? Science gives us information, but it is a political choice how much risk we wish to pay for in higher spinach prices.

Two caveats:

In addition to being “commodity specific,” the standards need to be “use-specific.” Much of the problem has come about in product sold as “ready-to-eat” — product grown and processed for that standard must meet significantly higher standards than produce grown for cooking or sold with the indication that it must be washed before eating.

The focus on mandatory, federal, uniform standards is important but it can also be a distraction from the important work of creating rigorous food safety standards. The truth is that if mandatory, federal, uniform standards had been in place last year, the food safety standards adopted would have probably been less stringent than those already followed by Natural Selection Foods, Ready Pac and their growers.

If the food safety outbreaks were a result of rogue operators working from a basement in some unlicensed manner, violating all the voluntary food safety standards, that would imply that mandatory regulation, by forcing the bad apples to reform, might solve the problem.

However, because these were large, reputable firms with food safety programs, it is important to note, as we did in the Pundit’s Letter To The Signatories Of The Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative, that it is the performance and behavior of good performers that must be changed.

So far the draft of the proposed new Good Agricultural Practices document to cover spinach, lettuce and other leafy greens, although an improvement over existing standards, is still inadequate to bring the industry up to the level of top food safety performers in this space, notably falling behind the Fresh Express standards.

If we can’t get this right on this commodity, if we can’t get really tough standards on ready-to-eat spinach and lettuce, we will have not learned anything from this debacle. United should give serious consideration to withholding its approval of the GAP documents unless they are revised to meet world class standards.

Of course, United’s board is made of smart people and one reason they are calling for “government established” standards is because they know the pressures to water down these documents when they are treated as subject to industry negotiation.

There is great wisdom in United’s letter for it really says that we as an industry need an opportunity to give input but we also need an outside referee to make sure the consumer judges the game as fair.

That is both insightful and true. Congratulations to the United Fresh Board and to President and CEO Tom Stenzel for a job well done.




Photos Reveal Avocado Damage From Freeze

A hat tip to Laurie Hill and Jan DeLyser of the California Avocado Commission, who forwarded these pictures of freeze damage from Scott Mather, a California avocado grower. Scott shot the photos in and around his ranch, the Stony Creek Ranch in Morro Bay, California. Scott explains the situation:

“I probably lost 70 percent of my fruit for this year.

Some of the others lost 100 percent, no doubt about it.

If it burnt back the new bud wood that would support the flowers this spring for the 2008 harvest, then there will be very little fruit from our area in 2008, so it’s a two year affect.

The higher up you are the better off, because the cold air settles to the bottom and collects. I was better off because of the hillside.”

Foodborne Outbreaks May Bring Opportunity To Increase Fiber Awareness

Is it possible that all this attention to deadly pathogens will rebound to the benefit of the produce industry? This article in The San Francisco Chronicle by Jeff D. Leach, the director of a Paleobiotics lab in New Orleans, Louisiana, holds out that possibility:

In the wake of E. coli 0157:H7 outbreaks associated with spinach and other produce in 2006, the 110th Congress will be dusting off and re-introducing the Food Safety Act, initially proposed in 2005 by Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., to assure the American public that the federal government is working hard to substantially reduce future food-borne outbreaks.

Unfortunately, this well-intended legislation will fall short of anything meaningful, as its patrons most certainly fail to understand the basic evolutionary rules of the germ warfare raging in the American gut and the bigger challenges facing the populace in this biological arms race.

As executives of the produce industry hit hardest by the illness and deaths attributed to strains of E. coli in 2006 brace for a possible onslaught of new regulations and additional inspectors trudging about their fields and packaging plants, they need only look out to the fields beyond their office windows to see a better solution to what ails them and the American public. The need is acute: Last Wednesday, Salinas-based produce packager Fresh Express offered $2 million in research funding to find ways to keep produce safe.

The media attention given to E. coli has raised the awareness of deadly pathogens in our environment. This may be an opportunity for industry and the government to highlight the importance of increasing fiber intake via fruits and vegetables. Government health messages to do so have had little success. Maybe it’s time to change the message.

Among the lush greens, yellows and reds of the American produce landscape, lies a simple, but critical component, to our evolutionary success as a species and the best defense we have ever had against reducing our risk from E. coli and other pathogens that seek to harm us on the biological battlefield that is us.

The simple defense to be found in these fields is good old dietary fiber.

Of which fresh fruits and vegetables are most often excellent sources. Fiber is also necessary:

…The friendly bacteria in our bodies are the first line of defense against invading pathogens, such as E. coli. Like any good soldier, they require food to fight the good fight. Dietary fiber is an important part of that nutrient base.

Simply stated: Fiber is not food for us, it’s food for the bacteria that live in our gut.

Our not-so-distant ancestors regularly consumed between 50 and 100 grams — and sometimes more — dietary fiber from diverse sources every day. This is the nutritional reality upon which our modern genome was selected and the symbiotic relationship which the trillions of bacteria in our gut evolved to depend upon.

However, the average American today consumes about 12 to 15 grams a day of dietary fiber — roughly half of what the government recommends and only a fraction of what our gut bugs need in order to resist infection and disease caused by a steady stream of pathogenic bacteria and viruses that enter our gut every day.

Put another way, the question we need to ask may not be why are these pathogens in the environment? It may be why do people get so sick from them?

The health implications of our staggering drop in consumption of dietary fiber has opened the door to E. coli and its band of pathogenic brothers who make millions of people sick every year, sending hundreds of thousands to the emergency room and an increasing number of us to the morgue.

The important symbiotic relationship we share with our friendly microbes and their role in our natural resistance to infection should be taking center stage in the upcoming congressional hearings on how to best protect “the people” from the inevitable food-borne pathogens associated with produce, and specifically, how to deal with this monster, E. coli.

The recent outbreaks have understandably made the American public skittish, not only about spinach and other produce tainted with E. coli, but about produce in general. This may pave the way for an additional decrease of fiber in the American diet, resulting in poorer gut health and reduced ability to resist infectious agents.

For E. coli specifically, stimulating the growth of a group of healthy bacteria in the human gut known as bifidobacterium by consuming special prebiotic dietary fibers known as oligosaccharides — found in plants such as onions, leeks, garlic, chicory and artichokes — can fortify our natural resistance.

It is a fascinating hypothesis: The problem is that we are not eating enough fiber, including high fiber fruits and vegetables, and this leads to a system that can’t resist infection and disease, which leads us to reduce fruit and vegetable consumption which weakens us further.

The solution: Eat more high fiber produce.




Pundit’s Mailbag — Auditing Standards

We’ve been focusing attention lately on the issue of auditors. First we discussed in Pundit’s Mailbag — Food Safety Audits And Government Oversight the question of whether a state-run program made sense or if we weren’t better off with private auditing firms.

Then in Pundit’s Mailbag — Auditor Qualification And Certification, a letter from Jeff Dlott of SureHarvest led us to discuss the issue of certification for auditors, a key component of the Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative.

Today we have a letter from a prominent third-party auditor providing amplification on the issue:

At this time in the area of GAP and GMP auditing in the fresh produce industry, an auditor or auditing firm’s work is of no value without buyer recognition. Buyers review audits, audit SOP, and guidelines. The buyers also shadow auditors and review the performance of auditing firms that they approve.

Should a more formal system of review and/or recognition develop, it would be ideal if the review were recognized regardless of where the audit is being conducted. This is what happens when the buyer’s technical staff is responsible for the oversight and approval of the auditor and the audit is thus recognized by the buyer.

Bob is astute in recognizing that one of the downfalls of allowing state regulation of auditors is that you are likely to get practice restrictions. Just as attorneys fully licensed in New York cannot practice in California, with few exceptions, unless they pass the California Bar exam, it is likely that state exams or certifications would also serve to limit auditors as to where they can practice. This also is even more likely to be true if the state develops its own auditing staff.

He is also correct, of course, in saying that today the key certifier of auditing companies is, in effect, the buyers. If they don’t recognize the quality of an auditor, they won’t give credence to his audit.

The question, of course, is if this is really desirable.

There will always be people, in every field, who have better reputations than others, but even very large buyers often do not have the technical knowledge to evaluate auditors.

When we ran our Pundit’s Pulse Of The Industry: Del Taco’s Janet Erickson and Notre Dame’s Dan Crimmins, Janet Erickson was being very forthright with the industry when she explained that:

We’re not as large a company as many of our competitors. We don’t do our own specific testing at the supplier level. The way we approach our supplier food safety is different than some of the larger companies. Our quality assurance director does go to the facility to do his own “audit”. He’ll spend a few hours there, mainly asking a lot of questions. In some ways most important, he asks who else you do business with, if the list of customers includes those that conduct stringent audits. We ask to see the most recent audit from a major lab and look at those results. If the supplier demonstrates being audited by others we respect, that is good enough for us.

It’s not that we don’t do our own analysis. We’ll look at operations ourselves and point out what may need attention. However, we don’t say you need to do a fifth audit if the company already is being audited four times.

We don’t have the resources to monitor in depth. Our suppliers are already doing business with many companies much larger in size that conduct extensive food safety measures. Best examples are Jack in the Box, McDonald’s, and Darden, all doing thorough jobs on food safety and quality assurance. That doesn’t mean we’re going to accept everything at face value. We always visit our suppliers and look at their operations with our own eyes, but also factor in their relationships with other customers.

Del Taco is not McDonald’s, but it is a substantial company and yet they find they must, to some extent, rely on reputation.

Janet is an honest person and sincerely wants to help the industry. Many are not so frank about their limitations.

Many buying organizations don’t have the staff to shadow audits and review the results, and if they did those staffs don’t have the scientific knowledge to know what they were seeing anyway.

In any case, allowing that some firms will always have better reputations than others, it does seem reasonable to think that anyone representing themselves as an auditor should meet certain standards.

If a person walks into a lawyer’s office, that lawyer may not be the best one in the world but, at very least, he should have passed the Bar exam.

If you want a certified public accountant, you should know that all of them have passed exams, met the schooling and experience requirements, etc.

The reliance on buyers to “certify” auditors can only work in a world of highly aligned supply chains in which buyers know who they are buying from. In the actual world of produce, where lateral trading is the norm, we need a more general confidence.

First, we need good GAP and GMP documents.

Second, we need assurance that everything grown and processed is grown and processed in accordance with these GAPs and GMPs.

Third, we need to know that a legitimate and qualified third-party auditor has certified this fact.

And this is the trick: we need to know all this even if the product is sitting on the dock of any vendor in Hunts Point or sitting on the floor of any warehouse in Nogales.

This means that the buyer will probably not even know the producer. Much less who he used as an auditor. Yet he has to know that the auditor still met minimum acceptable standards.

That is why the CPA model we focused on yesterday has strong appeal.




Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative
Recap XXXII

There is an ad-hoc group that started it all, the National Restaurant Association has its group working on a program and the Food Marketing Institute held a conference. All these buyer-led initiatives can get confusing, so to assist the trade in keeping track of them all, we are publishing this recap of coverage all in one place.

As new developments, occur we will continue to update this recap to help keep the trade organized on this important subject.

On September 25, 2006, in the midst of the spinach crisis, we published The Role of Retailers And The Future Of Food Safety, which pointed out that it is the “representations and warranties” that buyers demand that define the food safety programs we get:

“…in the end, the strength of our food safety systems is at least as dependent on what retailers demand as they are on what the government does for the simple reason that what retailers pay for is what they are going to get.”

Then in the issue of the Pundit’s sister publication, PRODUCE BUSINESS, which was unveiled at the PMA Convention in San Diego on October 21, 2006, we published Food Safety Is A Retail Issue, which pointed out:

“…what holds suppliers back is not that they need an FDA regulation — it is that they need to see a willingness on the part of buyers to pay more to obtain a higher level of food safety and security. So far that is missing.”

The Buyer-led Initiative for Food Safety was then announced. In time it came to be signed on to by nine important buying organizations:

Here at the Pundit, we applauded the buyer-led effort but on October 30, 2006, ran a piece entitled Buyer-Led Food Safety Effort Leaves Open Question Of Buyer Commitment, in which we pointed out:

“What would be helpful from these buyers is…a reassurance to the grower/shipper/packer/processor community that investments in food safety will be protected.”

As Gene Harris of Denny’s added his endorsement to the Buyer-led Initiative for Food Safety, we published, Pundit’s Mailbag — Denny’s Weighs In On Food Safety Effort on November 1, 2006, and we pointed out that the Western Growers Association was now looking for mandatory standards:

“Buyers can impose standards on their suppliers, but it seems as if the big grower members of WGA are more inclined to go with a mandatory program. Perhaps because this is more easily “saleable” to consumers, perhaps because the growers have no confidence that buyers will ever agree to a uniform standard on food safety and, perhaps, because growers know that buyers today can have the best of intentions but situations change and buyer’s change — and if legal product is available for much less money, that will put a lot of pressure on an organization to change its standards.”

On November 2, 2006, we highlighted an Opportunity For Buyers’ Food Safety Initiative, where we wrote the following:

“Here’s the Pundit’s suggestion to the buyers: Don’t wait for the deadline to pass. Withdraw the letter to the associations, which can only lead to endless negotiations with grower/shippers and watered-down food safety standards. Instead, create a temporary ad hoc consortium to spearhead the quick development of science-based food safety standards.

In the short term, these will be enforced by buyer demand, hopefully including other buyers who will buy into the plan; in the medium run the plan will be turned over to state authorities in California and federal authorities in Washington, D.C., as the basis for new mandatory regulation.”

We pointed out that this initiative may not stay in the hands of the ad hoc group leading the Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative when, on November 7, 2006, we announced: National Restaurant Association Forms Produce Safety Working Group and pointed out:

“What we should have learned from the FDA loss of confidence in the industry is that food safety is not something that we negotiate over. It has to be driven by the best scientific knowledge we have.”

Mark Munger of Andrew-Williamson Fresh Produce, a grower/shipper, pitched in his thoughts on the important role buyers play in the food safety arena and, on November 8, 2006, we published Pundit’s Mailbag — Insights From A Conscientious Grower, which specifically praised one foodservice customer:

I also have to commend one of our customers, who I believe demonstrates the value of collective partnerships between growers and customers. Two years ago we began working with Darden Restaurants. Darden takes food safety very seriously. They have empowered a food safety team that must approve each and every supplier. They have inspectors in the field who make weekly random inspections of growing operations, picking and packing programs. When problem issues are identified, they work closely with our food safety team to help educate our team and to ensure that collectively we fix the problem. The knowledge that an inspector can be in any field or packing shed at anytime has forced us to treat every day as an inspection day.

Additionally, Darden’s food safety team is separate from their buying team. If a farm is not up to par, they have the authority to stop all transactions until the problems are fixed. They truly put their money where their mouth is and have helped us become a markedly better company. I cannot think of a better example of the power of collective thinking between suppliers and customers. I think the industry would be well served to learn more about their programs and create similar models.

Not surprisingly, the Food Marketing Institute was not going to be content to sit this one out and, on November 10, 2006, we published FMI Steps Into The Food Safety Fray, which detailed a conference scheduled for December 5th at which FMI would host representatives from industry, associations, academia and government to advance food safety issues. Unfortunately, FMI decided to exclude the media and we pointed out:

“…if the goal is to build public confidence in the process the industry is going through, you not only open it to media, you send a velvet invitation to the big consumer media groups.

It smells of smoke-filled rooms where deals will be cut in secret. If you let in some light and air, everyone will have more confidence in the final product.”

On November 14, 2006, we published Pundit’s Mailbag: Grower/Shipper Calls Buyer Led-Food Safety Initiative Hollow Call To Action, in which a respected grower/shipper pointed out that “This is where the retailers must step out of their ivory towers and get their walk (vendor relationship) to match their talk (aligned supply chain)… If those who signed on to this letter would get committed to buying only from “qualified suppliers,” the laws of supply and demand will drive the solution and we will quickly catch up with the rest of the world in this critical area.”

On November 17, 2006, we featured Tale Of Two Buyers, in which we pointed out: “If the VPs are sincere about wanting the buyers to place food safety first, the VPs have the responsibility for changing the culture and the economic incentive systems.”

On November 21, 2006, we published Tim York Takes Leadership Role In Food Safety Crisis, which features an extensive interview with Tim York of Markon Cooperative as well as the announcement that the Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative gained ten new retail signatories:

Despite the impressive show of buyer support, we expressed some concern: “…it is also pretty clear that the prospect of one unified food safety standard acceptable to every one of the signatories, much less to those who have declined to sign, is somewhere between nil and nothing.”

On November 28, 2006, we published Words From Buyers Who Did Not Sign The Food Safety Initiative, and in this piece we added Mark Hilton, Vice President of Produce and Floral for Harris-Teeter, based in Matthews, North Carolina, as a signatory to the letter.

We also quoted buyers who had declined to sign the letter mostly due to their objection to the public nature of the initiative. We also pointed out how vendors were thinking:

Pundit Note: Many growers and shippers are irate over the effort as they see it as an evasion of responsibility. These buying organizations get exactly what they value enough to pay for. All too often, some of the same companies who signed the letter on Monday will, on Tuesday, buy some product without the slightest knowledge of where it came from.

On November 29, 2006, we ran Another Naysayer of Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative, which gave voice to the thoughts of some non-participating buyers that only mandatory government regulation is the way to go. Also on November 29, 2006, we published Pundit’s Mailbag — Buyers Lecturing Again, in which a processor there at the beginning of the national fresh-cut industry reminded us how uninterested in food safety most retailers were at the time.

On November 30, 2006, we continued our exploration of why some buyers were declining to join the buyer-led initiative with Self-Interests Play Role In Food Safety Initiatives. Also on November 30, 2006, we received a letter from Al Zuckerman of ProMark Group, which we focused on in Pundit’s Mailbag — Pundit Logic On Food Safety Regulation. We pointed out: “In terms of the difficulties on spinach and leafy greens, the key buyers are missing from the Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative. The buyers of the produce, in this case, are the processors.”

On December 1, 2006, we published Spinach And The Consequences Of Buyers’ Action, in which buyers who hadn’t signed on to the buyer-led food safety initiative pointed out that rigorous food safety systems will restrict supply and raise prices.

As we explained: “It is unknown if those who don’t buy spinach because of high prices will buy healthy alternatives. They may buy candy bars and die of complications of obesity. It is a completely open question as to whether safer spinach won’t cost lives in the end.”

Also on December 1, 2006, we responded to industry feedback claiming that foodservice did a better job than retail when it came to food safety by beginning a series of Pundit Pulses focused on foodservice. The first two, Pundit’s Pulse Of The Industry: Del Taco’s Janet Erickson and Notre Dame’s Dan Crimmins, dealt with how smaller buyers deal with these issues.

On December 5, 2006, we continued our discussion with buyers who refused to sign the Buyer-led Food Safety Initiative by noting that some of them weren’t thrilled with the Western Growers Association proposal either. On January 9, 2007, we published Pundit’s Mailbag — Farmers Are Not The Cause Of Food Safety Problems, which contained an important letter pointing out that farmers are expected to deliver “dirty” product to processors. You can read it here.

On January 10, 2007, we ran Pundit’s Mailbag — Oversights In Food Safety, which featured an important letter from Tom Russell of Dynasty Farms/Pacific International Marketing calling for a ban on the use of cow manure in agriculture and a “Right to Irradiate” bill. You can read the piece here.

On January 11, 2007, we ran E-coli 0157:H7 Vaccine Approved For Use In Canada, which related to efforts to stop E. coli 0157:H7 before it can hit the produce fields. Read it here.

IMPLICATIONS OF THE CRISIS
In addition, the Pundit has done several smaller pieces that touched on various aspects of this crisis. October 5, 2006, we ran a piece focused on another outbreak of foodborne illness — in this case, botulism in carrot juice. The focus, however, was on the necessity to change attitudes as the produce industry becomes less a packing industry and more a processing industry.
